On April 21, 2026, the U.S. dollar edged higher as markets reacted to an approaching Iran ceasefire deadline, keeping currency trading subdued amid geopolitical uncertainty and cautious positioning.

Dollar Rises as Markets Watch Iran Talks.

The U.S. dollar ticked higher on Tuesday, holding near an index level of 98.15 after a mild 0.2% drop in the previous session, as investors closely monitored developments around Iran's ceasefire negotiations.

The euro eased to $1.1781 and sterling to $1.3525, both slipping around 0.1%, while the Australian dollar weakened to $0.7171, reflecting softer risk appetite across major currencies.

“Markets are just in a wait-and-see mode,” said Carol Kong of Commonwealth Bank of Australia, noting that the outcome of talks is expected to steer short-term currency moves.

Market Pause as Oil and Policy Expectations Shift

Oil prices also softened, with Brent crude near $95 per barrel, as expectations of easing tensions raised supply hopes. The yen held steady at 158.89 per dollar, staying close to levels traders view as sensitive for intervention.

Attention now turns to U.S. retail sales data, forecast to rise 1.4% alongside signals from Federal Reserve leadership discussions.
