China’s Industrial Profits Highlight Growing Reliance on Exports

July 27, 2026 –China's industrial profits continued to grow in the first half of 2026, although the pace slowed from previous months, underscoring an economy that remains supported by resilient exports while domestic demand continues to recover unevenly.

The latest figures suggest manufacturers are benefiting from overseas demand, but policymakers still face challenges in strengthening consumption at home.

Export Strength Continues to Support Manufacturing

Data from China's National Bureau of Statistics showed industrial profits increased 18.7% during the first six months of the year, easing slightly from 18.8% growth recorded in the January-May period. June profits rose 15.1% year-on-year, slower than May's 21.1% increase, reflecting a moderation rather than a reversal in industrial momentum.

Despite softer growth, exporters continued to benefit from solid overseas demand, particularly in advanced manufacturing and technology-related industries, helping offset weaker activity across property-linked sectors and domestic consumption.

Domestic Demand Remains the Missing Piece

While manufacturing has remained resilient, economists continue to point to subdued household spending and uneven domestic demand as key challenges for China's broader economic recovery. Recent policy measures have sought to stimulate consumption and support private-sector activity, but the latest industrial data suggest that exports remain the primary driver of corporate earnings.

Analysts note that sustained global demand will be crucial if manufacturers are to maintain current profit growth during the second half of the year.

Global Trade Outlook Will Shape the Next Phase

Looking ahead, China's industrial sector faces a more complex environment as businesses navigate evolving trade conditions, geopolitical uncertainty, and changing global demand.

Any slowdown in international trade or renewed supply chain disruptions could weigh on export oriented manufacturers, while stronger domestic spending would provide a more balanced foundation for future growth.

Investors are expected to closely monitor upcoming economic data to assess whether China's recovery broadens beyond its export sector.
