August 20, 2026 – Shares of SK Hynix Inc. rallied over 12% during Seoul trading on Thursday, sparking a broad technical rebound across Asian semiconductor listings.

The sudden price surge triggered a temporary buy-side trading halt mechanism on the Korea Exchange as the benchmark KOSPI Index advanced nearly 5.9% to close at 6,852.58 points.

The rally marks a decisive reversal from mid-week pullbacks, directly catalysed by management’s historic decision to deploy corporate cash reserves toward direct equity cancellations.

Record Capital Return Program Addresses Valuation Discount

The core fundamental driver behind the surge is SK Hynix’s board resolution approving a ₩40 trillion ($28.6 billion USD) share repurchase and total cancellation program.

Representing the largest treasury share cancellation in South Korean corporate history, the initiative aims to acquire and retire approximately 24 million shares within a three-month execution window.

Management explicitly stated that the aggressive capital return target—now expanded to over 50% of cumulative free cash flow (2025–2027)—was designed to correct an unjust valuation discount.

High-Bandwidth Memory Monopoly Offsets AI Capex Fatigue

While broad technology sectors have faced Wall Street scrutiny over artificial intelligence infrastructure costs, SK Hynix continues to maintain an operational moat in High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM3e) supplies.

With net cash holdings approaching ₩69 trillion, the chip maker's cash conversion cycle remains backed by long-term supply agreements with primary AI hardware accelerators.

By pairing operational pricing power in advanced HBM chips with direct supply-side equity contraction, the enterprise has established a structural defense against broader semiconductor cyclicality.

Technical Reversal and KOSPI Market Benchmark Impact

From a technical analysis perspective, Thursday’s explosive double-digit rally erased the previous session's loss, pushing the stock back above its 50-day exponential moving average.

Market technicians highlight that reclaiming the ₩1,650,000 baseline keeps the primary multi-quarter bullish structure intact.

Sustained institutional inflows into South Korean tech heavyweights are expected to keep regional equity benchmarks insulated from global bond market volatility.
