US Bitcoin ETFs Surge with 731 Million USD Inflow in Largest Single-Day Haul Since January

September 4, 2026 – U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded a massive 730.9 million USD in net inflows on Thursday, marking their strongest single trading session since mid-January.
The aggressive liquidity injection pushed the flagship cryptocurrency above the 80,000 USD threshold, forcing widespread algorithmic short-covering.
While retail sentiment immediately turned euphoric, institutional asset managers are closely analysing the underlying market mechanics to determine if this influx represents genuine long-term accumulation or a temporary volatility spike.
Following a choppy summer trading environment, this sudden capital rotation confirms that institutional appetite for regulated digital asset wrappers remains highly reactive to macro pricing signals.
BlackRock Dominates the Capital Rotation
The primary catalyst behind Thursday’s massive inflow was BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which absorbed a staggering 454 million USD in a single session.
This single-fund dominance accounted for roughly 62% of the aggregate daily inflows across the entire U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF ecosystem.
Other major issuers, including ARK Invest (ARKB) and Fidelity (FBTC), absorbed 138 million USD and 74 million USD, respectively.
Remarkably, this aggressive buying comes just two sessions after IBIT suffered a massive 201 million USD redemption, highlighting the extreme intraday volatility within institutional allocation strategies.
With these fresh inflows, cumulative net assets across U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have swelled past 103.3 billion USD, representing roughly 6.3% of Bitcoin’s total market capitalization.
Short Covering vs. Structural Accumulation
Despite the staggering headline inflow numbers, sophisticated on-chain analytics platforms are warning institutional desks to temper their immediate bullishness.
CryptoQuant analysts highlighted that much of Thursday's upside price action may have been amplified by severe short squeezes in the derivatives market, rather than pure spot accumulation.
The data indicates that long-term holders actually realized approximately 110,000 BTC in net profits since late August, locking in gains during the price recovery.
For institutional traders, this dynamic suggests that ETF inflows are acting as a counterbalance to native on-chain profit-taking.
If this capital rotation is primarily driven by leveraged short-covering rather than fresh structural demand, Bitcoin may face renewed technical resistance before establishing a definitive technical floor.
Macro Tailwinds and the 843 Million USD Target
From a broader market perspective, the sudden resurgence in ETF demand is closely tied to shifting macroeconomic interest rate expectations.
As the Federal Reserve continues to fine-tune its monetary policy messaging ahead of the September FOMC meeting, non-yielding assets like Bitcoin are aggressively trading on yield curve fluctuations.
Chartists emphasize that Thursday’s 731 million USD haul is the second-largest in 2026, trailing only the massive 843.6 million USD record set on January 14.
If institutional buyers can sustain this momentum and push daily inflows back toward that January benchmark, market analysts project that Bitcoin could structurally target new all-time highs above the 85,000 USD zone.
Until then, algorithmic trading models will maintain a hypersensitive posture toward daily fund flow data and structural liquidity shifts.
