August 17, 2026 – Global crude benchmark prices edged higher during early Monday trading, extending momentum after both primary benchmarks gained over 5% during the previous week.

As Brent crude futures rose to $89.20 per barrel, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) advanced to $82.83 per barrel amid ongoing geopolitical friction in key energy shipping channels.

Market participants continue to navigate a delicate balance between persistent Middle Eastern transit disruptions and stabilising international supply mechanisms.

Covert Maritime Transport Prevents Severe Price Spikes

Recent reports indicate that Middle Eastern energy producers are utilising specialised shuttle operations through the Persian Gulf to maintain steady export volumes.

Large crude volumes are being transferred onto international supertankers in the Gulf of Oman, helping keep prices below earlier market peak projections.

This managed logistics effort has prevented wider supply shortfalls, helping stabilise global energy benchmarks despite localised maritime risk factors.

IEA Adjusts Demand Forecasts Amid Supply Headwinds

In its latest monthly market assessment, the International Energy Agency (IEA) adjusted its global oil demand projections to reflect ongoing transport friction.

The agency noted that localised export disruptions and elevated fuel prices continue to temporarily weigh on global oil consumption trends.

However, international throughput is expected to stabilise gradually over the coming quarters as alternative trade routes and supply adjustments mature.

Macroeconomic Outlook and Market Strategy

Energy analysts suggest that oil markets have entered a range-bound phase where geopolitical risk premiums are offset by structural supply adaptations.

Decisions by OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers regarding output targets will remain critical in determining physical supply availability heading into late 2026.

Until maritime corridors stabilise completely, crude prices are expected to remain sensitive to shipping developments and international inventory draws.
